Hopefully I long ago dispelled the notion of any perfection going on over here and so yes, I am aware that the music does not match the theme of the the week. Usually, we have blue's musicians this weekend but whoopsie daisy! That ball fell on the ground. Maybe next year we'll do it correctly again. So in a perfect world, that's what I would've done, but hey, I'm getting close to 70 now so cut me some slack. (Maybe don't hold your breath for future perfection. π)

You know what my absolute favorite cut of meat is of all the meats we carry?
Chicken Gizzards!!!
Ohmygosh, I just love them so much. They are basically little cartilidge-y chunks of protein and are just the absolute perfect snack.
This is the gizzards-to-go picture I sent my friend yesterday, trying to convince her to ride with me to do Menomonie deliveries. I still ended up going alone....?? Wasn't planning on sharing this with you all but this sale surprised even me!! (getting old has its perks!)
Why are gizzards so amazing?
Well, besides being super easy to cook (I just boil them) and then prepare (I just salt them, sometimes with a spicy salt to really shake things up), they are also:
- super high in protein, about 44g/cup (same as chicken breast)
- but better than chicken breasts if you're looking to lose weight
- gizzards are lower in calories than breasts
- gizzards are lower in fat than breasts
- but gizzards have the same amount of protein, plus so much more (they are an organ meat superfood!):
- Vit B12
- Niacin
- Riboflavin
- Iron
- Phosphorus
- Zinc
- Glucosamine
- Chondroitin
I would love gizzards even if they weren't amazingly good for you and so crazy easy but I've always loved eating all the cartilage off every piece of meat, so if you like that too and haven't yet discovered these organ-based one-step PROTEIN BALLS! Now's the time!! (You'll never screw around with making a peanut butter protein ball mess again.)
If you don't like chewy stuff I can't help you yet because I haven't made it past the boil-n-eat stage yet, but I promise there are ways: pickling perhaps? They can also be diced up and tossed in a soup or a stew. Got recipes? I'd love to see them!
Just another underappreciated "rock"star of an organ that can't wait to meat you.
And thus concludes my surprise birthday ode to gizzards. β€
Hope to see you on the farm soon!!
Your farmer & friend (looking to someday take it to the next level of friendship where I try to bribe you with organ meats),
